An earthquake was recorded 2,500 km from Male' today.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) just stated that a 6.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded north of Sumatra, Indonesia at 10:00am Maldives time.
The MET Office also said that the quake occurred 2,581 km from Male' and that Maldives would not experience any direct consequences.
The most powerful earthquake that Sumatra has experienced was on 26th December 2004, a 9.2 magnitude earthquake that caused a devastating tsunami, claiming the lives of many Maldivians, leaving them homeless and in distress. This earthquake was the third strongest in recorded history.
Earthquakes usually occur when two tectonic plates pull, slide or collide against each other, causing the built up tension and energy to set off seismic waves.
