MP Mauroof Zakir, 7 others charged over MDP protest

The PG Office said the charges stem from gathering on the streets, protesting loudly, disrupting businesses and traffic, obstructing police work, and refusing to comply with police orders.

Charges have been pressed against Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir and seven activists of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party over a their "Lootuvaifi" protest held last year. 

Media official of the Prosecutor General's Office stated that charges of deliberately obstructing the duties of a law enforcement officer have been pressed against these individuals last Thursday in relation to a protest held on October 3, 2025, in violation of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act.  

The PG Office said the charges stem from gathering on the streets, protesting loudly, disrupting businesses and traffic, obstructing police work, and refusing to comply with police orders. 

The eight individuals who have been charged are:

  1. AbduSalam
  2. Mohamed Hamaidh Abdul Ghani
  3. Ali Naufal
  4. Aishath Najudha Ali
  5. Ali Muavvaz
  6. Fathimath Zahiyya
  7. Hussain Rasheed
  8. Mauroof Zakir

The PG Office said Police had sought charges against seven additional individuals in connection with the case, but prosecutors declined to proceed. According to the office, there was not enough evidence to support the allegations, and pursuing the cases would not serve the public interest. 

A total of eight persons were arrested at the protest, including members of parliament.
