Ministry of Economic Development and Trade says ensuring food security and the availability of basic necessities is its top priority as tensions escalate in the Middle East.

In a statement, the ministry said it is closely monitoring the impact of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran in collaboration with relevant state agencies. The focus, it said, is to safeguard supplies for Maldivians amid potential disruptions.

The ministry said measures are being taken in response to the ongoing conflict, including working with government institutions and the private sector to ensure stocks of essential commodities are not depleted and to address possible import challenges.

Potential shocks to the international freight system are also being closely studied in coordination with relevant authorities.

“The ministry is working to identify difficulties encountered in import markets and shipping routes, and to find alternative markets to overcome these challenges,” the statement said.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has meanwhile formed a special Cabinet committee to coordinate measures in response to the crisis.

The committee, formed on Saturday afternoon, comprises:

  • Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel (committee chair)
  • Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon
  • Finance and Planning Minister Moosa Zameer
  • Economic Development and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed
  • Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Ameen
  • Homeland Security and Technology Minister Ali Ihusaan
  • Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim
  • Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Minister Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed
  • Islamic Affairs Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed

President’s Office said the relevant ministries would continue to share updates and pertinent information with the public.
