The police have submitted a request to the Prosecutor General’s Office to charge the Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, Mauroof Zakir, and two other members of the MDP.
According to the case completion documents from the police, they have requested charges against Mauroof, MDP National Council member Fatimath Zahiyya (Zaya), and Abdulsalaam of N. Holhudhoo, Maafolheyvilla.
According to the documents sent to the three individuals, the investigation into the case was concluded last Thursday.
The police requested charges against Member Mauroof, Zaya, and Salaam for gathering on various streets of Malé on the night of October 3rd last year in violation of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, protesting and acting in a manner that obstructed public transport and general businesses, as well as hindering police from performing their duties, disobeying police orders, and obstructing the legal obligations of the police.
In connection with the protest held by the MDP in Malé on the night of October 3rd last year, Member Mauroof, Zaya, and Salaam, along with others, were arrested that night. Member Mauroof was also arrested last December. That arrest was related to a protest by yellow-fin tuna fishermen demanding that the state-owned fishing company, MIFCO, purchase yellow-fin tuna.
Mauroof is one of the founders of the fishermen’s union and serves as the general secretary of the association.
