Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has warned that the upcoming month of March will see temperatures slightly above average.
MET records show that the feels like temperature in some parts of Maldives has crossed 35 degree celsius this week.
MET says daytime highs and nighttime lows across Maldives are expected to remain above average throughout March.
Maldives generally sees its hottest season beween January and June with the advent of Iruvai (Northeast) monsoon. The hottest month of the year is usually April.
To date, the highest feels like temperature was recorded at 48 degree celsius on April 1, 2024.
The heat feels more intense than the actual atmospheric temperature these days due to low humidity.
MET predicts that there will be lower than average rainfall in central and southern atolls in March. Rainfall may be at average, or slightly higher, in the northern atolls.
March last year saw unusual rainfall patterns, the report noted. Last year, Hulhule' experienced five times more rainfall than average during March. However, southern islands like Kahdhoo, Kaadehdhoo and Gan experienced extraordinarily lower than average amounts of rainfall.
Data collected from 1991-2015 indicate that average temperatures in March are between 30.5 and 30.9 degree celsius. The lowest recorded temperatures in March was 24.5 and 25.8 degree celsius.
MET advised the public, particularly fishermen, agricultural workers, and those managing water services to prepare in advance and take necessary precautions.
