President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated last night that there are no plans to visit islands for the purpose of campaigning for the Local Council Election.
During last night's PNC tarawih dinner, the President said that he visits citizens in a diplomatic sense, and to fulfill the responsibilities that are handed to him by the citizens.
As an example, the President highlighted his initiative to visit all of the islands, an initiative that had been completed last year.
As per President Muizzu, he does not wish to visit citizens as an election approaches.
"I do not wish to go to the islands to campaign for the upcoming Local Council Election. It is something I do not want to do. I do not mean this to say that I would not go to an island to mark the end of a major government project at an island if its residents were to request it. I say this because I have no plans to go to any island for the sake of campaigning for the upcoming Local Council Election," said the President.
President Muizzu went on to say that it was not uncommon in the past for Presidents to attend election campaigns at islands in Maldives.
The President continued by stating that plans to visit islands would be scheduled in parallel to elections, with their thinking being that elections should be held on separate dates.
This government is looking to meet with its citizens as soon as possible and to serve them, and that increasing the number of elections is not of great importance to them, said President Muizzu.
The President has gone to every inhabited island in Maldives within two years of him being elected. This was achieved with his last visit being to K. Thulusdhoo on 28th October 2025.
At the time, the President's Office stated that with the Thulusdhoo visit, the President had visited 187 inhabited islands and cities as well, with him having visited 63 islands twice in that same time frame.
