The government has extended the deadline for applying for flats and land plots under the Aailee Boahiyavahikan scheme to April 30.

Previously, the deadline for applying for flats was set for April 17. Applications for land were to be accepted until March 4.

Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure announced today that the deadline for submitting both flat and land plot applications has been extended to 11:59pm on April 30.

The government will be issuing 7,000 flats and 15,000 land plots of 1,250sqft each under the Aailee Boahiyavahikan housing scheme launched on January 18.

This week, the Housing Ministry revealed that as of then, they had received 5,067 applications, 1,633 of which were for land plots, and the remaining 3,434 for flats.

An additional 11,304 forms were in draft stage at the time, the ministry said.

Registered Male' residents, and those from other islands who have lived in Male' for a minimum of 15 years are eligible for housing under this scheme.

In the case of flats, 4,000 units are reserved for Male residents, 1,500 units for people from other islands living in Male', and 2,400 units for special categories.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously announced that a total of 25,000 land plots will be issued from Rasmale', which is being reclaimed to address the housing issues in the capital. In this first scheme, 15,000 of these land plots are to be allocated.

As the current scheme prevents individuals from applying if their spouse owns land in the Male' area, the government announced that a new programme would be launched at a later date to address this. If joint recipients of a land plot issued under the previous government's Gedhoruveriya housing scheme agree to relinquish their land plot, they can separately apply for land under this new scheme.

Housing Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib has previously said that efforts are underway to draft the policies of the new housing scheme. He added that the new scheme will be opened for applications early in March.
