The education ministry has tasked local company Maxcom to procure over 70,000 tablets for students and teachers, last month.

The government had previously announced their decision to digitalize schools by reducing the usage of text books in classrooms. While proposing the State Budget 2018 to the parliament, finance minister Ahmed Munawar had said that they had allocated MVR 154 million for this project.

State minister for the education ministry, Ahmed Shafeeu, said on Sunday that they have already started training teachers to adapt to the increased usage of tablets and they hope to start using them in all the schools by the end of the first term. He further stated that they intend to provide Wi-Fi connection to classrooms beforehand.

This year, students will start using tablets along with text books and slowly decrease the use of text books as they go. Education ministry said they will conduct researches in order to find out the best way to incorporate the usage of tablets in classrooms.

While the new academic year starts next Sunday, the government is hoping to cut down the heavy load of books student carry to school every day.
