Popular movie director Mohamed Nimal passed away early this morning.

Popular movie director Mohamed Nimal passed away early this morning. 

62-year old Nimal had been under treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital after suffering a stroke. 

Nimal was hospitalized at IGMH on the night of December 31 after suffering a stroke. He had been rushed to the hospital after suffering a stroke while riding his motorcycle. 

Nimal's condition worsened and he had gone into a coma. He had been on ventilator support for the past two months. 

Family tried to take Nimal abroad for treatment, but due to the seriousness of his condition, his transfer abroad was not authorized. 

A source close to Nimal confirmed that he had passed away this morning. 

Before going on to direct movies, Nimal had a successful career on-screen as well. He started his career as an actor on the 1984 Easa Shareef movie, "Nufooz". 

In 1993, Nimal wrote the screenplay, directed, and acted in 'Sitee' - a movie that found a place as one of the most popular movies amongst local audiences. 

Other popular movies that Nimal directed included 'Zalzalaa', 'Yoosuf', and 'Niuma'. 

In 1991, Nimal was presented the National Encouragement Award in recognition of his service to the film industry.
