The Atmosphere Foundation has introduced a scholarship programme to provide international dive training to 10 Maldivians each year, in a bid to strengthen local participation in the tourism sector.

The foundation said the initiative would fund scuba diving training and professional development, with the aim of building long-term employment prospects for young people and enhancing the role of Maldivians in the industry.

Applications have not yet opened. Further details are expected to be announced at a later date.

According to the foundation, the programme is designed to support individuals seeking to enter the field as well as those already working in the sector who wish to advance from basic certifications to professional levels.

Successful completion will lead to internationally recognized certification and employment opportunities in dive centres, watersports operations and marine activities at resorts across the country.

The foundation said the scholarships are intended to improve participants’ technical competence, strengthen safety awareness and prepare them for workplace demands; key requirements for progression in diving and marine related roles.

Recipients will be required to work in the Maldives for a specified period after completing the programme, ensuring that the skills gained contribute to the country’s long-term development.

The initiative is aimed at increasing local capacity in tourism, making it easier for resorts to recruit trained Maldivian professionals and improving job security for young entrants to the sector.

Atmosphere Foundation Vice President Abdul Azeez Abdul Hakeem said the country’s future depends on stronger local representation across all levels of tourism.

“Tourism is the heart of the country’s economy and our future depends on the representation of local people at all levels of the sector, not just at entry level, but especially in technical fields and senior positions,” he said.

He added that the programme would remove financial and structural barriers to training.

“This programme will remove barriers to training, provide young people with international certifications and help them reach new heights in their workplace. By serving in the Maldives, the country will benefit from the skills acquired and help build a stronger tourism workforce,” he said.

The foundation said it continues to support initiatives aimed at community growth, youth empowerment and skills development.
