Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has launched an investigation into workplace safety at Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) following a series of serious incidents involving its employees.
A WAMCO worker was seriously injured on Sunday and is currently being treated on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Last month, an expatriate worker was killed after being struck by an excavator at a WAMCO site in Thilafushi.
In a statement, HRCM said it had decided to conduct an urgent inquiry into the safety and security of WAMCO employees, citing repeated concerns over workplace conditions.
Police are also investigating both incidents.
A post circulating on social media, accompanied by a photograph, stated that the injured worker, a WAMCO driver, fell into a vehicle dump container from a ramp, a drop of approximately 12 to 13 feet.
The post further alleged that he sustained three fractured ribs.
Mihaaru News was unable to obtain a comment from WAMCO.
