‘Feels like’ temperatures rise as Iruvai monsoon intensifies

At 11 am today, the ‘feels like’ temperature of 36 °C was recorded in Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo. In Male', it reached 35.6 °C, while Laamu Kadhdhoo temperatures rose to 35.5 °C and in Seenu Gan it was recorded at 35.1 °C.

With the sunniest stretch of the Iruvai monsoon under way, ‘feels like’ temperatures have climbed across parts of Maldives this week.

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office), the heat index has exceeded 35 °C in several areas.

At 11 am today, the ‘feels like’ temperature of 36 °C was recorded in Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo. In Male', it reached 35.6 °C, while Laamu Kadhdhoo temperatures rose to 35.5 °C and in Seenu Gan it was recorded at 35.1 °C.

The Iruvai monsoon runs from January to June and is typically the hottest period of the year, with April often the warmest month.

The highest ‘feels like’ temperature on record was logged on 1 April 2024 in Male', when the heat index peaked at 48 °C.

The rising temperature during this period is due to calm winds and persistently high humidity during,, which make temperatures feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature.

Today marks the 12th day of the sixth Nakaiy, Hiyaviha, in the Maldives Nakaiy calendar. During this period, seas are usually very calm, winds remain light, and conditions tend to be hot both by day and at night.
