Nolhivaranfaru has been experiencing a power outage since 8am today due to one of two generators on the island facing technical issues.

Nolhivaranfaru Council President Abdulla Nadheem told Mihaaru News that the power went out at approximately 8am today when the 800kW generator at the Fenaka powerhouse faced technical issues and had to be shut down. The island now has in service only one 400kW generator, he said.

"This generator alone cannot produce enough electricity for the entire island. Efforts are underway by Fenaka to repair the 800kW generator," he explained.

As the 400kW generator is too small to provide electricity for the whole island, electricity is being provided to various zones in shifts.

Nadheem further said that the island's health centre is being provided electricity through the use of a back up generator.

The island had been in the midst of the power cut even when students had sat for today's O'Level exams. However, Nadheem said that at this time, the school had been provided electricity through a separate generator.

"The school had proper electricity when the exams were going on. Even the ACs were switched on," Nadheem said.

Nolhivaranfaru has a resident population of over 1,200 people.
