The boardwalk railings of Funaadu, Fuvahmulah's Bandaara Kilhi (the largest freshwater lake in Maldives) were damaged yesterday by unknown parties.

The Fuvahmulah City Council posted a video today on social media showing the damage, with them stating parts of the railing had been broken and thrown into the marsh.

The city council has expressed concern over these repeated incidents.

"Repeatedly damaging the lake is deeply saddening," the city council said.

"As the boardwalk is popular amongst foreigners who come to the island and is also a point of pride for the island, we ask these acts be halted."

The Bandaara Kilhi, located in the middle of Miskiymagu, Dhoodigan and Malegan, and the marsh connected to the lake is an area that highlights the special environmental features and the richness it holds.

Last November's fire that occurred on the lake saw an area more than 360,000 square feet be burned down.

The lake spans 4.74 hectares and was placed under protection by the government on 18th July 2012.

The park that was built at the Bandaara Kilhi was Maldives' first nature park, which opened on 14th September 2018.
