New mosques being built across the country display modern architecture and prioritize expanding capacity to cater to large congregations.
However, the new mosque unveiled in N. Kudafari yesterday breaks away from the pattern, returning to Maldives' roots and catering to a small, intimate congregation of just 150 prayers.
Ahmed Siyam Mohamed (Sun Siyam), originally from Kudafari, developed this mosque, Masjid Al-Qasim, in tribute to his father, reflecting rich Maldivian heritage and craftsmanship.
The mosque was officially inaugurated for Maghrib prayers yesterday by Siyam.
The mosque's design draws inspiration from Male's historic Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miski'iy), showcasing intricate coral stone art, elegant lacquer work, refined masonry, and masterful carpentry. Teak panels encircle the structure, adorned with Quranic verses meticulously carved into the walls, with teak beams and doors adding to its beauty.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs also commended the mosque for rekindling Maldives' history, culture, and skilled artistry.
The mosque does not feature a dome, instead opting for a minaret similar to the Friday Mosque. Dedicated ablution areas are also found within the mosque.
Maldives' renowned architect and architectural heritage researched Mauroof Jameel participated in the mosque's inauguration ceremony.
"This is truly a beautiful mosque," Mauroof admired Masjid Al-Qasim.
Mauroof said that the mosque, with its new design inspired from historic coral stone mosques, brings new life to Maldives' culture.
"The interior work of the mosque is also excellent. With this we have seen that a beautiful mosque can be built even without a dome."
The mosque, with its echoes of Maldives' history, is expected to draw tourists as well.
Located near the island's harbour, it is a convenient mosque for both residents and visitors to the island.
Siyam has previously built another mosque in Kudafari, in memory of his mother.
