North Harbour, which was closed two months ago for the widening and redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, has reopened to vessels.
Vessels were instructed to vacate the eastern side of North Harbour on 14 December last year to facilitate the second phase of Boduthakurufaanu Magu road development project.
The works involved reclaiming part of the lagoon to widen and modernize Boduthakurufaanu Magu from the Valhomas Market area to North Harbour.
During the closure, cargo operations were diverted to Hulhumale' and other harbours in Male' to allow vessels to load and unload goods.
The upgraded stretch of road was widened, asphalted and opened to two-way traffic last week, easing congestion in the area.
With the completion of the works, the North Harbour area cleared for road expansion has now been reopened to cargo vessels, passenger boats and fishing vessels. The facility resumed operations at 11:00pm last night.
Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) said only vessels complying with North Harbour regulations will be permitted to dock.
Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) said the next phase of the project will involve construction of the road from Izzudhin Jetty to the MTCC ferry terminal.
MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudhy said work on the stretch will begin during Ramadan and is expected to be completed by April or May.
