The main halls of four mosques with a capacity of more than 800 worshippers have been equipped with air-conditioning, the President’s Office said.

The upgrade is part of a government initiative to air-condition the main prayer halls and women’s sections of mosques accommodating over 800 people.

The mosques fitted with air-conditioning are Masjid Al-Furuqan, Masjid Al-Jalaaluddin, Viyafaari Veringe Mosque and Masjid Umar bin Al Khattab in Hulhumale'.

Spokesperson for the President’s Office, Heena Waleed, said the air-conditioning systems have been installed and were in use from Tuesday night.

In his presidential address at the opening of Parliament for the year, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the main halls and women’s prayer areas of mosques with a capacity exceeding 800 people would be air-conditioned and ready before the start of Ramadan.

The government also announced that additional mosques will be officially opened during the holy month.

Young Huffaz will lead Tarawih prayers in 24 mosques across Male'. In addition, young khatibs will lead Friday prayers at the Islamic Centre and Salman Mosque on the third Friday of Ramadan.
