Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has accused the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of consistently putting its own interests first when shaping national policies.

Speaking on the issue of decentralization, the Vice President said the MDP leadership has failed to present practical and sensible guidelines. He alleged that past MDP governments pursued partisan interests over broader national priorities.

VP Latheef further stated that the country had been “saved by the wisdom” of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, noting that President Muizzu understands public sentiment and is committed to delivering development aligned with the people’s needs.

Vice President also criticized the economic management of the previous administration, claiming that excessive money printing had created long term financial difficulties.

He said that while former President Mohamed Nasheed and some members of parliament had publicly advised against printing money, the practice continued under the MDP led government.

VP Latheef, who previously served as MP for the Fares-Maathodaa constituency, said he had personally advocated against such measures during his time in parliament. According to him, the current economic challenges stem from those earlier decisions.

“Today we are facing issues arising from that time. These are the difficulties that our President is facing today, and he is trying to find solutions,” he said.

Despite the challenges, the Vice President added that President Muizzu’s administration remains focused on safeguarding basic rights and advancing development projects across the country.
