Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) stated today that two of its ambulances traveling on emergency calls have been involved in accidents within the past month or so in Addu City.
In a press release, AEH noted that two dangerous incidents occurred over the past month when the hospital's ambulances, while on emergency runs, collided with other vehicles driving on the road.
The statement emphasized that since an ambulance is a vehicle traveling to provide urgent care to patients in life-threatening conditions, giving way to an ambulance is essential; it is a legal obligation as well as an civic responsibility to be fulfilled as a way of helping one another.
The statement further noted that upon hearing the sound of an ambulance siren, it is the responsibility of every vehicle on the road at that time to immediately clear the way and facilitate a path for the ambulance to travel.
The hospital also mentioned in the statement that it is working with relevant authorities to conduct a special campaign to reduce such dangerous incidents and increase public awareness. AEH said it would take measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Last night in Hithadhoo, Addu City, an ambulance transporting victims of a dangerous accident to the hospital collided with a car.
The accident occurred when the ambulance, traveling at high speed on emergency, hit a car that suddenly entered the road. Both the car and the ambulance sustained significant damage in the accident.
Police have stated that the car involved in the accident has been towed and the matter is being investigated.
