President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has received an invitation to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh’s new prime minister following Thursday’s general election.
According to The Times of India, Bangladesh’s interim chief adviser Muhammad Yunus has invited 12 heads of state to attend the ceremony, scheduled to be held on Tuesday at the South Plaza of the Bangladesh parliament.
It is not yet confirmed whether Muizzu will attend.
Countries from South Asia invited to the ceremony include India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan. Other nations extended invitations include China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia and Brunei.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led coalition secured victory in the election, winning 212 of the 299 parliamentary seats. The party is headed by Tarique Rahman, son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who died last year. Muizzu had earlier congratulated the coalition on its win.
The vote marked the first national election since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in 2024, after 15 years in power. Yunus, an 85-year-old Nobel peace prize laureate, assumed charge following Hasina’s departure and oversaw the country’s administration until the elections. His interim government barred Hasina’s Awami League from contesting the poll.
BNP has said its foreign policy would prioritize engagement without hostility. Despite strained relations with India following the asylum granted to Hasina after her removal, the party thanked Indian prime minister Narendra Modi for his congratulatory message and expressed readiness to strengthen ties.
Reports in Bangladesh have also said Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia over the killing of protesters during demonstrations against her administration.
