The Information Commissioner’s Office (iCOM) has fined the Islamic Ministry MVR 700 for failing to attend a scheduled meeting regarding requests for information.

iCOM received two complaints against the ministry for not providing information in response to formal requests. A hearing was initially scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed at the ministry’s request. The rescheduled meeting, set for today, was canceled due to the ministry’s absence.

The office said the failure to attend prevented the Information Commissioner from fulfilling legal duties. Under the Right to Information regulations, parties unable to attend must notify iCOM at least one hour before the meeting.

The fine of MVR 700 was issued for violating this rule.

iCOM noted that other government agencies have previously faced fines for similar failures to attend hearings.
