Maldives Meteorological Service has announced that air quality in Northern and Central Maldives has declined to unhealthy levels. The conditions are expected to persist over the next four days, the MET Office said.

MET Office urged seafarers and those spending extended time outdoors to take necessary precautions and follow guidelines from the Health Protection Agency.

Red Alerts are issued when the Air Quality Index is between 151 to 200. At this level, it poses risk to everyone.

Air quality Index in Vilimale' is currently at 163. The conditions pose risk of adverse health effects for all, including heart and respiratory complications as per the alert. HPA has advised all residents in Vilimale' to use face masks.

In Male', the Air Quality Index is at 151, which amounts to an Orange Alert. HPA said that at this level, health risks are posed to sensitive individuals, including children, elderly persons and people with heart or lung conditions.

Today, the air pollution is lowest in Fuvahmulah and Addu.

The current haze is a seasonal phenomenon caused by transboundary pollution. During the transition to the Iruvai (Northeast) Monsoon, prevailing winds carry dust, industrial emissions, and smoke from agricultural burning in northern India across the Arabian Sea to the Maldives.

Alongside health risks, the haze causes low visibility, obstructing transport.
