It has been decided to conduct post-mortems on the two prisoners who died in prison last week while serving their sentences.

A police media official stated today that it has been decided to conduct autopsies to investigate the truth behind the two deaths. Therefore, the official said that efforts are underway to send both bodies abroad.

The first to die while imprisoned to serve a sentence was Ibrahim Suhail, 53, Dhaftharu No. 439, on Monday morning of last week. Corrections stated that Suhail died of pneumonia a week after being admitted and treated at IGMH due to deteriorating health.

At the time, he was receiving treatment for a stroke he had suffered.

The second person to die that day was Hassan Niyaz, 45, Dhiggaagasdhoshuge, S. Hithadhoo. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison on a drug-related case on the 30th of last month. Niyaz died after his condition became serious while at Hulhumalé Prison and he was subsequently taken to Hulhumalé Hospital.
