The Greater Addu Campaign for the "golden age" of Addu

Addu is facing a tough decision with the upcoming Local Council Election. It is whether the fifth term of Maldives' second largest city Addu should elect an MDP mayor or a PNC candidate as mayor. In order to go in that direction, Addu's PNC mayoral candidate Mushrif Ali began a campaign last night with a strong slogan.

It is "The Greater Addu" campaign to bring about the golden age of Addu.

The leaflet that was handed out gave a detailed description of Mushtif's vision, which stated that Addu has never been an ordinary place, with examples of proof and its difference having been shown.

However, the leaflet reads that Addu can now be described as a "base city", where it has become a small city at the lowest level, with focus towards the big picture and civilization having been lost, with attention only being given to the minor details in day-to-day administrative operations.

The leaflet also stated that their aim has shifted, with an image of their vessel having run aground.

PNC has said that the purpose of Greater Addu is to change this image.

That vision was built upon five key foundations:

  • Establishing a center specifically for academic research for the purpose of upholding Addu's character.
  • To change and expand the restrictions surrounding tourists who travel to Addu for its tourism.
  • Bring artistic employment to Addu regarding the tourism industry.
  • To make it easier to invest in Addu, push innovative thinking and open it up for the youth.
  • To reconnect with those who belong to but had left Addu and bring back the brains of the island.

Mushrif stated that he is running for mayor as the framework of administrative operations had lost its purpose, to restore Addu's glory days, and to build a civilization shaped upon the supervision of prosperous and empowered citizens.

As per the vision, the "city" is to be expanded via tourism, build a framework upon a foundation of a scholarly economy of employment opportunities and to establish the city as the main hub for regional sports.
