Sale of some batches of French brand Babybio's infant formula have been banned in Maldives after toxins were found in them.

In an announcement today, the Maldives Food and Drug Authority stated that cereulide toxin has been found in some batches of Babybio formula.

The authority stated that Europe's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed has published a notice from French authorities to ban the sale of Babybio formula, and direction to properly dispose of existing batches.

Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. It can cause nausea, vomiting and stomach pain, and could lead to complications such as dehydration in younger infants.

As a preventive measure, the following batches have been banned:

  • Babybio Optima 1, 400g, Batch no. 900932
  • Babybio Optima 1, 800g, Batch no. 894408
  • Babybio Optima 1, 800g, Batch no. 900035
  • Babybio Caprea 1, 800g, Batch no. 899014
