Minister of Fisheries Ahmed Shiyam has stated that HDh. Kulhudhuffushi is the city through which the most dollars and currency can be brought into the northern Maldives, adding that this can only be achieved by those who know how to do it.

Speaking at a ceremony held last night to launch the local council election campaign for Kulhudhuffushi City, Shiyam said that Kulhudhuffushi is the economic hub of the North and the island with the strongest economy.

He noted that it is the city poised to receive the most dollars and currency from northern development efforts, but stressed that this can only be realized by a government that knows how to derive benefits from it.

"We don't want people who build gazebos today. This Kulhudhuffushi City is a big city. A strong economy. This is the economic hub of the North of the Maldives. The most dollars and currency can be brought into this city through the gateway of Northern development," Shiyam said.

"But that can only be done by those who know how to do it," he added.

Shiyam stated that this government is clearing the paths to bring development to the city, but the citizens must be prepared to embrace that development.

The Minister explained that becoming a people who receive development can only happen by moving forward with a government that works to achieve it.

"To achieve those things, it is necessary to hold the hand of the government that works to accomplish them and vote for the candidates standing for council. Those are the individuals present here. That is this city's Mayor (PNC candidate) Ibrahim Gassan and the President of the Women's Development Committee, Khadheeja Moosa," Shiyam said during the campaign launch.

Shiyam added that these individuals are not people who will build gazebos and parks, but rather people who will enrich the pockets of the citizens. He described this as something that would bring social stability to the city.

Shiyam further noted that the 2024 budget was not President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s budget; therefore, funds were not included in the budget to carry out projects as the President desired.

"The year 2024 became a year where governance had to be carried out under very difficult circumstances."

However, he stated that 2025 is the President’s first budget, and with that budget, the government has set out to vibrantly bring the President’s visions to life.
