President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that the construction of a 500-bed tertiary hospital in Hulhumalé Phase 2 will begin by the middle of this year.

During the Presidential Address at the opening of the People's Majlis, the President shared the administration's achievements and future plans for the health sector, highlighting this major project as a key priority to address the growing medical needs of Phase 2 residents.

This announcement follows various concerns over the lack of adequate healthcare facilities in the area at the moment, despite the significant influx of residents to the new housing units.

The President also confirmed that construction of a new 250-bed building within the existing Hulhumalé Hospital premises will start by mid-year.

Additionally, he outlined several major healthcare enhancements planned for the Male' region, including:

  • Expanding neurosurgery and MRI services.
  • Broadening the capacity of the endoscopy suite, eye care, and dental laboratories.
  • Establishing a separate catheterization laboratory (Cath Lab) at Dharumavantha Hospital to expand cardiac center services.
  • Introducing new surgical procedures at Dharumavantha Hospital.

Addressing past delays, it was noted that while an agreement for a specialized Thalassemia Hospital in Phase 2 was signed over a year ago, practical work has yet to begin.

However, the President reiterated his commitment to inclusive healthcare development, ensuring that services are brought closer to the community.
