President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced today that a new exam is to be introduced for Grade 6 students to assess level.

In his annual presidential address in parliament today, President Muizzu stated that the learning standards of primary stage students have not been adequately evaluated to date.

He stated that last year, a pilot program was conducted where students of Key Stages 1 and 2 who have completed primary level were given an exam to assess the levels to which the targets of the national curriculum had been reached.

The exam, named the National Curriculum Exam, will be given this year onwards, and with it, the standard of Maldivian students can be compared to those in other countries, the President said.

In addition to this, primary education syllabus is to be revised, and prepared on a curriculum integration model. Along with this, books for Key Stage 1 students are now being revised as thematic books, the President said.

"As a result, lessons across subjects will be integrated, enabling students to gain deeper understanding and refine teaching methods," the president said.

The exam was first given to Grade 6 students in December last year. The exam was conducted in five subjects: Dhivehi, Islam, Mathematics, English and Science.

Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu has previously said that lower grades in primary level affect the O'level results of students.
