A Sri Lankan man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a Bangladeshi worker at a work site in Kaafu Thilafushi.

The victim, 24-year-old Amin Miya, was reported missing on 26 January and found dead two days later on 28 January.

Police said he died after being struck by the teeth of an excavator operated by 32-year-old Heshan Maduranga Dissanayaka Menika.

Menika was produced before the Criminal Court, which granted seven days’ remand while he faces charges of intentional homicide. The court order noted that some evidence had been submitted in support of the allegation, including the incident report and CCTV footage.

According to the investigating officer, the victim was killed after being struck by the excavator, which was allegedly operated without due care.

Police said that after the initial contact, Amin Miya fell among piles of rubbish, and work on the site continued uninterrupted. It remains unclear whether the excavator operator was aware of the incident as it occurred.

CCTV footage reportedly shows the moment the excavator struck Miya, highlighting the circumstances leading to his death.
