Similar to last year, India has allocated USD 69 million in aid for the Maldives in its 2026-2027 budget. According to the budget presented today, USD 69 million has been designated as aid for Maldives.
This is the same amount that was allocated for the Maldives in the 2025-2026 budget passed last year.
While India has included a total budget of USD 25 billion for the Foreign Ministry to provide aid to various countries, Bhutan received the largest allocation among South Asian nations.
Nepal followed in second place with an allocation of USD 87 million. Following them, Mauritius, along with the Maldives, has also been included in the budget with an allocation of USD 69 million.
In contrast to last year, the budget allocated to Bangladesh has been reduced by half. Accordingly, USD 6.5 million has been designated for Bangladesh for the 2026-2027 period.
Although the relationship between the Maldives and India was strained when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, ties have been strengthening following the President's visits to the country.
In this regard, President Muizzu has made official visits to India on two occasions, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited the Maldives as the special guest for last year's Independence Day celebrations.
