Former Finance Minister Ahmed Inaz has resigned from his position as Chairperson of the Pension Administration after he stated he "could not find a sustainable solution" even after many discussions were held in regards to the MMA's investment to the pension fund, with the funds being invested to a government bond.

Inaz posted on X stating that he believes acquiring the funds from MMA would cause damages when taking the current economic state of Maldives into account. He said that he resigned because he "technically" believes it would cause great losses.

"I do not believe that a sustainable solution was found to the MVR 2.4 billion bond that was submitted by the government in a time the financial status of the Maldivian state has fallen to worrisome levels," as was written in the post on X.

His hope is that the state's financial situation stabilizes and that reform comes about with forward thinking policies.

"My hope is that Maldives can overcome this time of debt and return to a path of sustainable and innovative development."

While Inaz has resigned over the bond issue, he had previously spoken in favor of it.

Regarding the bond issue, Inaz said that he does not believe MMA investing in the fund and the funds being used to invest in a government bond is against the law.

In a post on X on 17th October 2025, Inaz gave his assurance that the Pension Board and management did not act against the rules, regulations, policies and internal guidelines related to the Pension Office. He said that discussions have always been held throughout every administration to reduce possible negative outcomes that may befall the sustainability of the Pension Fund.

"...Maintaining the sustainability and protection of this fund is the top priority as my role as the Chairperson of the Pension Board," said Inaz.

While the opposition has stated that MMA investing in the Pension Fund and investing said funds into a government bond is akin to printing money, the government continues to say that it does not mean that money is being printed.

As per a statement that was given to Mihaaru News in the past by the Finance Ministry, MMA's decision to buy T-bonds (Treasury Bonds) in the secondary market which were sold by the government to the Pension Fund, and the subsequent addition T-bond issuance from the government via the fund is a worthwhile transaction.
