The Head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), Ismail Sajid, was dismissed from his position today after allegations of sexual harassment were proven against him.
It is understood that the committee established within the MMA to investigate sexual harassment cases determined that the allegations were substantiated.
Consequently, the committee recommended his dismissal from the post. Based on this recommendation, the decision was implemented, and Sajid was removed from his role as the head of the FIU.
Sajid was appointed as the head of the FIU in August last year. Following the allegations, he was suspended from his duties on December 30.
Prior to this role, Sajid had also served as a member of the Tax Appeal Tribunal.
The FIU is a specialized unit within the MMA established under the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Act to monitor financial transactions. The power to appoint and dismiss the head of this unit rests with the Governor.
Previously, Abdulla Ashraf, who also held the position of FIU head, was dismissed from the post in 2018.
