Two MDP members of the Male' City Council have called for discussions on the terms and implementation of the government’s housing project for Male' residents, urging that the council be consulted on the process.
MDP councilors Mohamed Saif Fathih (Galolhu North) and Mariyam Nazima Mohamed Faiz (Galolhu West) raised the issue in a letter addressed to Mayor Adam Azim. The letter was submitted to the agenda of the council meeting scheduled for today.
In the letter, the councilors said no discussions had been held with the Male' City Council regarding the conditions of the housing scheme. They also noted that the government’s housing committee had not consulted the council’s housing committee.
Saif and Nazima said housing is a matter of public concern and stressed that the council should play a role in providing housing in Male' a position President Dr Mohamed Muizzu himself had advocated during his tenure as mayor.
They called on the council to be consulted and involved in housing-related decisions, and proposed advising on changes to the housing scheme’s conditions as well as requesting the government to amend them.
However, the council meeting was cancelled due to lack of quorum. Only nine of the 18 councilors were present at the meeting chaired by Mayor Azim.
Of the 18 members of the Mae' City Council, 14 belong to the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC).
Due to the lack of quorum, other agenda items were also postponed, including discussions on land allocations made during President Muizzu’s tenure as mayor and alleged irregularities in the allocation of the fish market.
According to a video shared by Saif on X, those present at the start of the meeting included Saif, Nazima, Mayor Azim, Galolhu South councilor Mariyam Reehan Nazim, Hulhumale' councilor Ali Aiman, Machangolhi North councilor Saeedha Rashaad, and Henveiru West councilor Shaufa Saleem.
