The Ministry of Health has today awarded a contract to establish a private room facility at Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital (KRH).

During a ceremony held at the Ministry of Health this afternoon, the project to build the facility, which will include private rooms with isolation capabilities, was awarded to a private company, Altec Maldives Private Limited.

According to the Ministry, the work was assigned for MVR 53.6 million, with a completion deadline of one year and two months.

State Minister Khadheeja Abdul Samad Abdulla signed the agreement on behalf of the Health Ministry, while General Manager Hussain Tasmeen signed on behalf of Altec Maldives.

According to the Ministry’s website, this project is funded by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

The Ministry further noted that this is the bank’s first standalone project to be carried out in the Maldives. KRH is identified as the hospital providing services to the highest number of patients in the country outside of the Malé area, serving residents from Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, and Shaviyani atolls, as well as other nearby atolls.

The Ministry explained that patients currently seeking services must be admitted to general wards, which creates difficulties for both patients and their helpers, especially when long-term care is required for those traveling from different islands.

The Ministry highlighted several additional challenges currently faced by the hospital:

  • The hospital presently lacks the service to isolate patients in cases of highly communicable diseases like COVID-19.
  • Although KRH is a center for medical students' community modules and various other health sector training, the hospital must currently rent its own conference room, a hall from another government center, or an external venue to conduct such sessions.
  • While the hospital manages over 700 staff members, including those at health centers across the atoll, there are currently no adequate facilities for staff training.

Details of the new facility:

  • The facility will feature 14 private rooms designed to accommodate both patients and their helpers.
  • Each room will include an attached toilet.
  • Specific rooms will be dedicated to moderate patients, critical patients, and patients with special needs.
  • In addition to private rooms, the facility will include a dialysis room, emergency room, medical store, general store, nursing stations, autoclave room, admin room, briefing room, utility room, tea room, and a prayer room.
  • A multi-purpose hall will be located on the first floor of the building.

The Ministry stated that the completion of this facility will provide immense relief to people traveling from various islands to seek services at the hospital.

Furthermore, it will allow patients with communicable diseases to be isolated separately, ensuring that the hospital’s general services can continue without disruption.
