The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed concern over the time frame provided by the Elections Commission (EC) to submit application forms for the Local Council Elections, stating the period is too short.

The MDP noted that because the time frame is so brief, it is causing significant difficulties for applicants. The party further stated that this is not a sufficient period for filing forms, as it takes many days to clear criminal records from state institutions and complete other necessary requirements.

"We express our concern that many people may lose the opportunity to contest the election due to this issue. Therefore, this party calls upon the Elections Commission to find a solution to this matter," the MDP said.

The Elections Commission opened applications on the 17th of this month for the Local Council Elections and the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, which are scheduled to be held on April 4. The opportunity remains open until 3:30 PM on the first of next month.

Some parties have also expressed concern regarding the Elections Commission's decision to use only eFaas for filling out the endorsement forms of independent candidates contesting the local council elections.

According to the EC, applicants must submit all required documentation and pay the administrative fees through the commission's portal, my.elections.gov.mv. The EC stated that it will also notify candidates of the decision regarding their applications through the same portal.

In this election, island council presidents, vice presidents, and councilors will be elected, along with city mayors and city councilors. Members will also be elected for the Women’s Development Committees.

The voters' list for these two elections was published on the 8th of January. According to the list, 294,937 people are eligible to vote.

For this year’s local council and WDC elections, people will be elected for 225 constituencies.
