Maldive Gas Deputy Managing Director (DMD) Mohamed Abdul Kareem (Rukuma) has resigned from the company.

He told Mihaaru News that he resigned from the company to take up a high ranking position at another government company.

The Privatization Board has accepted Kareem's resignation.

With the current government taking office, Kareem was given the position of DMD at WAMCO. After that, he was appointed as DMD at Fenaka, and subsequently at Maldive Gas.

As per known information, Kareem left the position he was appointed to in July 2025 due to internal issues at Maldive Gas. The issues grew as Managing Director (MD) Abdulla Mohamed had his responsibilities reduced by the company board, with the board handing major responsibilities to the two DMDs.

Kareem was given responsibilities over sales, finance, human resources and procurement. The other DMD, Ibrahim Fikuree, was given responsibilities over projects and production, and the engineering department.

The MD was given responsibilities over administration and operations, and the health and safety department.

"The company board gave responsibilities to the two DMDs without the MD's permission," as was said by a source.

An official from the company stated that with the reduction in responsibilities, the MD had not come into the office for a number of days, and had only returned to the office last week after going on vacation.

Even though Maldive Gas is a subsidiary of STO, conflict had arisen between MD Abdulla and STO. The biggest issue there is the board's decisions not being enforced, said an official of Maldive Gas.
