President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated today that India's Republic Day demonstrates the high priority the country accords to freedom, democracy, and good governance.
He made these remarks in a post shared on X on the occasion of India's Republic Day.
In his post, President Muizzu noted that the day highlights India’s commitment to these fundamental values and expressed his hope for the further strengthening of bilateral relations in the future for the benefit and prosperity of the people of both nations.
According to the President's Office, in addition to the social media post, President Muizzu sent formal letters to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to commemorate India's 77th Republic Day.
In his letter to President Murmu, President Muizzu stated that the 60-year friendship between the Maldives and India is built upon a foundation of mutual trust, respect, and understanding between the two countries.
In his letter to Prime Minister Modi, the President's Office noted that President Muizzu reflected with pride on the development achievements resulting from the relationship between the two nations.
"Furthermore, he highlighted the leadership shown by India at the regional level under Prime Minister Modi’s guidance, and stated that the government remains committed to strengthening ties and increasing practical cooperation on matters of mutual interest in the days ahead," the President's Office website stated.
The President also noted that he values India’s continued support for the economic and social development of the Maldives.
India celebrates Republic Day on January 26 every year to mark the implementation of its Constitution in 1950 and its transition to a republic.
