Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has lodged a constitutional case at the High Court claiming that the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act was designed to impose control over the media.
MJA announced today that they have also requested an interim order preventing the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission from taking disciplinary action against journalists and media organizations until the case reaches conclusion.
"We believe the Act fundamentally compromises press freedom and the constitutional rights of journalists," a statement from MJA reads.
MJA, and a large majority of local journalists and media personnel, called for the withdrawal of the Act when it had been initially submitted to parliament. This was backed by petitions and protests outside the parliament.
