The GDh. Fiyori Council announced yesterday that it is seeking to hire 18 employees as the Local Council Elections approach.

The announcement stated that the council is looking for 18 Council Assistants (Social) to work at the institution on a contract basis for approximately two years (23 months).

These positions, announced under Civil Service regulations, offer a basic monthly salary of MVR 7,700. According to the announcement, employees will also receive a monthly position allowance of MVR 2,310 and an attendance allowance of MVR 60 for each day worked.

The main responsibilities of the position include:

  • Sweeping and cleaning social areas of the island.
  • Pruning and maintaining trees.
  • Emptying dustbins.
  • Providing assistance in various programs and occasions organized by the council office.

The announcement noted that these positions require individuals who are literate. Literacy will be verified during the screening stage or through documents issued by an official institution. School documents confirming the completion of Grade 5 or higher will be accepted.

Those interested in the positions are requested to submit their application forms and documents to the Fiyori Council office or via email before 2:00 PM next Thursday. The interviews for selecting candidates will take place between the 5th and 12th of February.

The Fiyori Council issued this announcement despite the government prohibiting councils from hiring new employees without special permission in the lead-up to the Local Council Elections, which are scheduled for April 4.

The LGA told Mihaaru today that when the Fiyori Council requested to hire a large number of employees, they were instructed to proceed only after obtaining permission from the Finance Ministry and the Civil Service Commission.

While the Fiyori Council has announced the recruitment of a large number of staff, the council’s current President, Faizal Rasheed, has decided to contest the upcoming Local Council Elections as an independent candidate.

Under the "Regulation on Hiring Employees and Leasing Land during the Final Year of Councils" published by the Local Government Authority (LGA) last November, following amendments to the Decentralization Act, councils can only hire employees during the final year of their term with permission from the Authority and the Finance Ministry.

According to that regulation, within the final year of a council's term, the leasing or granting of land, lagoons, or reef areas under the council’s jurisdiction, as well as the implementation of projects not specified in the council’s established development plans, can also only be carried out with permission from the LGA and the Ministry.
