Velana International Airport handled more than 89,000 tonnes of cargo last year, marking a 10 percent increase compared to the previous year, statistics shared by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) showed.
In a social media post shared by MACL, VIA processed 89,163 tonnes of cargo in total. Of this, 66,480 tonnes were inbound cargo, while 22,323 tonnes were outbound.
The airport also recorded a rise in transshipment cargo, handling 16,372 tonnes, a 22 percent increase year-on-year. Of the transshipped goods, 3,192 tonnes were exported through sea-to-air transfers, while 13,180 tonnes were transported via air-to-air connections.
Freighter aircraft movements at the airport totaled 524 flights during the year. Airlines providing cargo transshipment services at Velana International Airport include FCOM, Fly Vaayu, MJets, Qatar Cargo, National Airlines, Air Master and MNG Airlines.
Velana International Airport, the Maldives’ main international gateway, also handled 8.3 million passengers last year.
