Stelco expands power capacity ahead of Ramadan and peak season

Stelco said it started shipping new generator sets to islands on January 14 as part of efforts to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply and improve service quality during periods of high consumption.

State Electric Company (Stelco) has begun increasing electricity generation capacity across islands in preparation for Ramadan and the upcoming peak demand season.

Stelco said it started shipping new generator sets to islands on January 14 as part of efforts to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply and improve service quality during periods of high consumption.

According to the company, the project will enhance the reliability of electricity services in island areas and strengthen overall power supply during Ramadan and the Iruvai monsoon, when electricity usage typically rises.

As part of the preparations, Stelco has carried out the following upgrades:

  • A 600 kW generator has been installed at the Thaa atoll Thinadhoo power plant, increasing total generation capacity to 1,539 kW.
  • A new 600 kW generator has been brought to Alifu Alifu atoll Mathiveri, raising capacity to 1,650 kW.
  • A 1,000 kW generator has been installed and is now operational in Alifu Alifu atoll Ukulhas, increasing capacity to 2,564 kW.
  • An additional 1,000 kW generator has been installed in Alifu Alifu atoll Thoddoo, increasing the island’s electricity generation capacity to 3,592 kW.
  • Installation work has begun for 15 additional generator sets in the Male' area.
  • A new 1,000 kW generator has been installed in Kaafu atoll Guraidhoo, increasing the island’s capacity to 2,960 kW.
  • An additional 1,200 kW generator has been installed in Vilimale’.

Stelco said these measures are aimed at ensuring a 24-hour uninterrupted electricity supply, particularly during Ramadan and the early months of the Iruvai monsoon, when demand traditionally peaks.

The company reiterated its commitment to improving power infrastructure and maintaining stable electricity services for communities across Maldives.
