The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has said that their project in outfitting additional elevators at Hiyaa Flat towers in Hulhumale' Phase 2 now sees eight towers having been fitted with new elevators and are currently in use.

While sharing updates regarding the project, HDC has said that towers H1 through H8 have new elevators.

The public now has access to said elevators as well.

Current progress in installing elevators:

  • Elevator installation is currently ongoing at towers H14, H15 and H16
  • Towers H9, H10, H11 and H12 are currently at the cladding and framework installation phase
  • Frame fabrication work being done at towers H11 and H12
  • Platforming work ongoing at H16

As per HDC, they have all the supplies and equipment needed to install the elevators.

The new elevators are large enough to accommodate stretchers, with a capacity of 21 people.

The practical work to install two extra elevators at Hiyaa Flat towers began on 18th April 2024. The project was awarded to China's Shenyang Yuanda Intellectual Industry Group Co., Ltd.

HDC has stated previously that a cost of USD 18 million (MVR 278 million) will be spent on the installation of 32 new elevators.

Some of the 16 towers built to 25 floors during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration have four elevators, with some having three as well. Nevertheless, there have been complaints from those who live there stating they have experienced difficulties in using the elevators due to a lack of them compared to the number of people.

And so, during the most recent Presidential Election campaign, one of the biggest pledges from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to Hiyaa Flat residents is to install additional elevators at the towers.
