The Ministry of Social and Family Development has cancelled its announcement seeking a consultancy firm for the construction of a picnic island in each atoll.

The ministry had announced last Sunday that it was inviting bids from consultancy firms to provide services for the Picnic Island Development Project, a government initiative to develop designated picnic islands across Maldives.

However, the announcement has now been cancelled, with no reason provided for the cancellation.

Under the original notice, interested parties were required to register by 2:00 pm on the 21st of this month, with the deadline for bid submissions set for 10:00 am on the 28th.

The project aims to reserve one island in every atoll as a picnic island, developed specifically for public use.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously said the initiative would provide residents of each atoll with a dedicated recreational island, while also supporting the tourism sector.

The President had stated that construction of picnic islands in all atolls was expected to be completed within this year.
