Last year marked the highest amount of money ever received as Zakat al-Mal (Zakat on Wealth) in the Maldives, according to statistics released today by the Zakat House.
The Zakat House publicized data today covering the past five years, from 2021 through the end of last year.
According to these statistics, a total of MVR 483.79 million was received as Zakat al-Mal over the last five years. The breakdown is as follows:
- 2021: MVR 91.39 million
- 2022: MVR 92.70 million
- 2023: MVR 90.28 million
- 2024: MVR 102.28 million
- 2025: MVR 107.21 million
As shown, the highest collection was recorded last year, totaling 107 million. The Nisab was increased to MVR 11,191.95 last year.
This threshold is calculated at a rate of MVR 18.81 per gram of silver, totaling MVR 11,191.95 for 595 grams.
In the Maldives, Zakat al-Mal is levied on gold and silver, as well as on agricultural produce and business merchandise. For those living on islands, Zakat al-Mal is distributed to the poor through the local councils.
