Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is set to officially launch campaigns for the upcoming Local Council Elections on February 12.
In a press conference held today, Campaign Manager Abdulla Waheed stated that the party is undertaking preparations for the election ahead of launching the campaign.
The party has recently held internal primaries to select candidates for the election.
Waheed said that the party is forming campaign teams across all regions of the country. A special training will be commenced today for candidates and campaign teams, he said.
Waheed asserted that MDP will make every effort to win the election by a large margin. He alleged that the government is obstructing their efforts and called on the government to conduct campaigning under democratic principles.
MDP's Deputy Manager for the Council Elections and former MP for Hulhumale' Ali Niyaz stated that MDP candidates are well-versed in the decentralization system, and has experience and expertise in the field.
Ruling People's National Congress has begun door-to-door campaigning in the Male' region.
The Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections are scheduled for April 4.
