Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has met with senior executives of popular app TikTok to discuss expediting the introduction of monetizing content in the Maldives.
Economic Minister Saeed held these discussions with TikTok's Head of Government Relation and Public Policy for the region, Emir Gelen.
The ministry said that the efforts fall under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's pledge to facilitate monetization for Maldivian TikTok creators.
Currently, Maldivian creators are unable to monetize on the popular social media platform. Elsewhere, the platform offers rewards for users based on follower and view counts for posts.
To monetize content, users must create a TikTok Creator Marketplace account. Users with a minimum of 10,000 followers, and a minimum of 100,000 views over the preceding 30 days are eligible to open such accounts. There are other options of monetization as well.
