Human skeletal remains were found in the Thundi area of Fuvahmulah yesterday.
A Facebook post shared by Zaid Ahmed said that what appeared to be human bones were discovered in the Thundi area.
The post claimed the remains included a skull and hip bones believed to belong to a young girl, adding that the location was thought to have been used as a burial site in the past.
Fuvahmulah Mayor Ismail Rafeeq told Mihaaru News that the discovery was not unusual.
“People were buried in various places around the island in earlier times.
During periods of erosion, human bones are occasionally exposed in different areas,” he said.
Rafeeq said that similar discoveries had been reported last year as well.
The mayor said the Fuvahmulah City Council would collect the remains and rebury them at a cemetery.
One of the Maldives’ oldest known burial grounds is also located on the island, at the cemetery of the Friday Mosque of Fuvahmulah.
