Discussion held with UK to overcome climate change damage

The Maldivian government held a discussion yesterday with the United Kingdom (UK) to receive technical and financial assistance in order to overcome damages from climate change.

As per a statement released by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment today, the ministry met with the British High Commissioner to Maldives Nick Low and members of the British High Commission yesterday regarding the damages caused by climate change.

The ministry said that a discussion was held regarding the crises and unforeseen damages caused by climate change.

As per the ministry, they were represented by Director General of the Climate Change Department Amjad Abdulla during the meeting.

"During the meeting, the ministry highlighted flooding caused by rainfall, sudden changes in the ocean such as rough seas, sea level rise, coral bleaching and long term damages. Both sides discussed what the UK could do for Maldives in overcoming such damages by providing technical and financial aid," as per the ministry's statement.

The ministry stated that they had shared their efforts in securing funding from international climate funds, with agencies that are prioritized by Maldives being discussed as well.

The statement reads that they had highlighted it is important to work at an international level to reduce the effects of climate change and to adapt to such changes, with the ministry appealing to the UK to delay no longer and proceed with their international efforts.

The ministry said that a discussion was also held regarding what can be done by both sides towards climate change and to find opportunities to do so.
