The Jumhooree Party (JP) decided today to support candidates from the People's National Congress (PNC) in the upcoming Local Council Elections scheduled for April.
Following a heated debate during a council meeting presided over by the party's leader, Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim, 18 members voted in favor of supporting PNC candidates in the elections to be held on April 4, according to a person who attended the meeting.
Out of the 30 members who attended the council meeting, 12 members voted against supporting PNC candidates. A JP council member stated, "JP was also proposed to contest this election independently. However, that proposal did not receive support." Qasim did not cast a vote for either side as he was chairing the session. Along with these decisions, it was also passed today that JP will only field candidates for the Maamigili constituency, which is the constituency of the party leader, Qasim.
"The meeting concluded after a very long and heated session," the council member who shared information with Mihaaru News said.
"MDP is also divided. There is no particular benefit for us in JP by going with MDP. Even in the last presidential election, MDP did not act rightly."
The JP council member further noted that the best path for both the party leader and the party is to remain with the candidates of the ruling party, PNC.
Although JP has decided to support PNC in the council election, the party had decided not to support any party during the second round of the most recent presidential election.
However, since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, Qasim has been expressing support for all government matters and making it clear that he stands with the administration.
The Elections Commission opened the opportunity to contest the council elections last Saturday. The window to apply for the election will remain open until 3:30 PM on February 1.
