Health Protection Agency (HPA) appealed for public caution today as cases of respiratory diseases are increasing alongside dengue fever and diarrhea.
In an announcement, the agency stated that reports of dengue fever and respiratory ailments have risen across various parts of the country. Citing recent statistics, the HPA noted that cases of diarrhea and vomiting are also on the rise, particularly in the Greater Malé area.
Consequently, the public is advised to take preventive measures and remain vigilant against these illnesses.
To protect against the common cold and respiratory infections:
- Wear a mask that properly covers the nose and mouth when in crowded public spaces.
- Avoid visiting patients and small children while unwell.
- Unless absolutely necessary, avoid going to schools, workplaces, or public gatherings until symptoms improve; if you must go, ensure a mask is worn.
To protect against dengue:
- Eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites where stagnant water can collect.
- Use mosquito repellent lotions to prevent bites.
To protect against diarrhea and vomiting:
- Keep food items covered at all times.
- If experiencing diarrhea or vomiting, increase the intake of ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) or other fluids.
- Wash hands thoroughly before preparing food, serving meals, or feeding others.
The HPA has specifically requested that the elderly and individuals receiving long-term treatment for chronic conditions, such as heart, lung, or kidney diseases, seek medical attention early before their condition worsens.
Additionally:
- Seek emergency medical care without delay if you experience symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, wheezing sounds while breathing, or extreme weakness.
- Do not use medications such as cough syrups or antibiotics unless directed by a healthcare professional.
- Seek immediate medical care if vomiting prevents the intake of fluids, or if you notice unusual weakness or a decrease in urination.
